Are you experiencing a lot of rejection when presenting your business opportunity? How about prospects who say they are going to sign-up under you but never do? As a new marketer, I am still finding it difficult to not oversell my business. It is easy to blame yourself and wonder what you are doing wrong. I think this is a mistake because a lot of times, it has more to do with the prospect rather than your marketing technique.

Too Much Convincing May Mean Your Prospect is Not Qualified

Before you go blaming yourself and wondering why you are experiencing a lot rejection, you may want to take a look at the types of prospects you are talking to. A qualified prospect will already have an interest in your opportunity. Whatever their reason why, they should be seeking you out and wanting to learn more.

A non-qualified prospect tends to be someone who requires much more convincing. If you find yourself overselling your opportunity, this is a good sign that this person is not interested and will likely reject your presentation. They may even say they will sign-up with you just to get rid of you and then refuse to respond to your follow-ups.

I have learned that you shouldn't have to try so hard in closing a prospect. The presentation portion of your business should be left to third party tools such as video presentations, live presentations, webinars, web sites, 3-way conference calls with your sponsor, etc. Now, I can't say for certain that doing it this way will achieve better results.

I am still experimenting with various techniques myself. However, it does makes some sense as a new marketer to try not and pitch your opportunity too much when there are tools available that can present the information much better until you learn the ropes.

Generating Better Qualified Leads

You can help avoid having to convince people to consider your opportunity by getting as targeted as you can when producing leads. Most new marketers will target folks who desire to work from home (which is fine,) but if you can target niches within your industry, it may take less convincing as you are offering something that they are looking for anyway.

Another thing that helps is by letting prospects come after you. This can be achieved with personal web sites, using blogs, and writing articles (guest posts on blogs, article marketing.)

One thing that I've learned so far since I've been a network marketer is to not take a new lead for granted. Yes, you will run into people who ask for more information and then blow you off after you have given it to them. Yet, there are those you will get in contact with who are truly interested in the opportunity.

Once you get into the hang of things, you will begin to get requests for more information and you'll need to do some following up. Below are some tips to take advantage of every lead that you get.

An Email Request for More Information

If you get an email requesting more information, respond to it as soon as possible. A good way to save time is to have a basic email template which briefly describes your opportunity and personalize it for each person. At the end of your reply, ask if they would like to chat over the phone or if they have any more questions. End the email with some type of call to action so that the urgency is there to at least reply to you even if they are not interested.

Phone Call Follow-Ups

If your lead says yes to a phone call, find out when a good time would be to call them. Keep in mind the time differences depending on their location. It helps if you set a specific time, however, if they tell you anytime is fine, try to call before or after dinner hours. If you call at an inconvenient time, ask for another time to call or have them call you when they have the chance. Most people have cell phones and free long distance so they may not mind calling you back at their convenience.

Following Up After an Initial Phone Call

If you call and they are unable to speak with you at the moment, be sure to send a follow up email thanking them for their time and letting them know that they can contact you anytime. Let the person know that you are available by email, instant messenger, phone, etc. Make it as easy as possible for them to reach you and get the information that they need. If they are truly interested, they will reach out to you again.

Don't be tempted to blow off a potential lead. It's easy to think that they are not truly interested but chances are they really want to learn more. The one you let get away could have been a shining star for your team. Make contact and follow up!

I listened to a great Beachbody® webinar yesterday which talked about how to build your team. One of the main points that stuck out to me was something that went a little like this:

It's better to have 10 willing leads than 100 new leads

Network marketing involves making new contacts as often as possible whether you do it online or in-person. The problem many new marketers face is constantly following up with people who are not interested in the opportunity. What I've learned is that it is important to make many new contacts, however, there are some things to keep in mind:

  • Don't give out too much information
  • Use third party tools to promote the business (web site, dvd presentations, etc.)
  • Get new prospects on a 3-way call with your sponsor

It really is a numbers game. The more contacts your make, eventually, you will have those who are genuinely interested in what you are offering. Once you have the truly interested prospects, it is best to follow up with them rather than chasing the new contacts who showed no sincere interest.

New network marketers are often told that it's all about chasing down people regardless of their interest. It's all about closing them and making that sale. Personally, I feel that type of networking isn't necessary for my Beachbody® business. I would rather share the opportunity and let the third party tools speak for themselves. I would rather have fun building a team of people who are truly seeking a home based business and truly want to improve their health as well as help others do the same.

I would feel like a scammy sales person if I tried to push the opportunity on anyone who would give me the time of day. If a person shows no interest, I think it's best to leave it at that. Tell them about it and if anything clicks with them later on, I'm sure they will get in contact. Time is better spent focusing on the few who are wanting to get started. That is just my take on new leads after listening to this webinar.

Maybe my thought process and strategies will change later on down the road as I gain more experience. What are your opinions about new leads?
