Contrary to popular belief, not everyone is cut out to be a network marketer. That is the big misconception about the industry because some marketers will try to recruit anyone who will listen. What tends to happen is that people with an "easy business" or "fast money" mindset join a company and as soon as an obstacle appears, they quit.

It is true that almost anyone can start, but there are still some requirements to consider when talking to a prospect. There are a few things we can do as network marketers to help people who truly want to be in this industry.

1. Be honest with your prospect
The worse thing we can do as marketers is try to dazzle prospects with the hopes of easy money or an easy business. You can ask any successful network marketer today if running their business was easy and I bet they will tell you that it took a lot of work to get to where they are. Let your prospects know up front what is involved. It is a business and requires time and effort.

2. Learn about your prospect's mindset
This is someone that you may potentially work with. Do they have a "make money fast" attitude? Are they looking at the business short-term? Is the only thing on their mind, "How much can I make?" These are the wrong mindsets and you will only be hurting yourself by working with that kind of mentality. Chances are, a person with that attitude will surely quit at the first sign of "work."

3. Get out of desperation mode
When we take on the desperation mindset as marketers, we attract people who are in it for a quick buck. If you want to attract qualified individuals who understand the work that is involved then change your own mindset. You don't need to be desperate to build your network. There are people out there that you can work with, you just need to have them find you (learn marketing skills.)

I have experienced all kinds of mindsets in just the first few months of being in this industry. I have run into those who are all about the dollars and cents. I have met those who understand that it takes work. In the long-run, it is much better to have a smaller team of individuals that will run their business rather than signing up those who are seeking something easy only to drop out later.

Many new marketers are often pumped up and excited about their new business and that is a great way to start out. Yet, when it comes to presenting the products or business opportunity, they fall flat and wonder why their prospect doesn't take the same interest as they do. How can someone NOT like what I have to offer? These products are awesome! Who wouldn't want to own their own business? Have you asked those same questions or very similar? Don't worry, I have also and I believe one of the biggest reasons new marketers have trouble pursuading others is because they aren't probing their prospects.

Probing Your Prospects

Now, when I say probing, I don't mean literally poking your prospect and trying to see their insides. Besides, that is a good way to get arrested! All kidding aside, probing simply means asking the right questions. I've learned that everyone is motivated by something. If someone takes an interest in your products or business, it is very likely that something inside of them is motivating their interest.

When someone contacts me about products or starting their own business, I begin by finding out why they are interested in the first place. I will ask about what they do, their background, family life, etc. Most of the time, they are very open and will tell you right away why they want to use the product or start a business. Once you learn their motivating factors, it makes it much easier for you to tell them how what you are offering can meet their needs.

Shut Up and Listen

Often times, we can actually over promote and talk the prospects ears off without ever listening to what they are trying to accomplish. Sooner or later, the prospect is turned off and realizes that you could care less. Most people can read through a sales pitch and most people do not like being sold to. You may feel it is necessary to get out everything at once about your business. It's easy to think that the more information you pile on, the better a person will understand the value in your company. It's important not to get caught up in information overload.

Diagnose Their Concerns and Offer Remedies

Network marketing is a great business model because it is based on helping others reach success. As you help others achieve, you in turn achieve also. Consider how much easier it would be to help people if you understood their concerns first. Having a deeper understanding allows you to offer a remedy to their concerns. Maybe your prospect is looking to earn some side income to pay bills but can't take on another job. You can use that information and explain why joining your network is a convenient way to start a business part-time. You can go into how the business can be run from home, etc.

When your prospect can relate their concerns to your offer, it makes it make it easier for them to make the decision. You help them see how they can benefit. Of course, there are no gaurantees that asking the right questions and listening will convince every prospect to take on your offer. However, it is a much better method than making them feel like just another lead.

All network marketing companies have their own rules and restrictions on how you are allowed to promote their products and services. One prime example are registered names and trademarks. Most cmopanies will have a list of reserved keywords which you are not allowed to use in domain names or other marketing materials. This can seem like a hassle when you are thinking of ways to promote your business, yet aren't allowed to use certain keywords in your marketing efforts.

Another example of restriction on marketing is how some companies do not allow you to build your own web site pertaining to the products/services. Some networks may only want you to use the web sites that they duplicate for everyone in the business.

How to Get Around the Advertising Restrictions

There are some ways to get around these restrictive marketing policies if you are dealing with them. Of course, make sure that you understand what all of the rules and restrictions are for your network maketing business before investing any time and money into marketing.

Brand yourself - There are no restrictions in how you brand yourself. Create a web site about you and market your skills, talents, and business opportunity. Let potential leads know what you bring to the table and how you can help them if they are interested.

Target niches - Just about every product or service out there has some niche that you can market in. For example, my network marketing business is in the health and fitness industry. There are so many ways that I could target a niche and funnel leads into my prospect lists in order to present them with my business opportunity or sell products.

Types of Marketing Methods

Since I come from a web background and have a strong interest in internet marketing, my advice would be to create niche web sites in which you build your prospect lists with newsletter sign-ups. This is also referred to as "building a list." The easiest way to do this that I know of is by signing up with a good autoresponder service such as Aweber.

You create your individual lists and place the sign-up forms on each of your niche sites. You pre-populate your autoresponder lists with several messages that provide some type of free information to keep the lead in your system. Eventually, you can then send out messages that promote your business opportunity.

There are different ways to go about it but having a good autoresponder and niche sites are the beginning of building an automated system of capturing leads.

I am experimenting with this process myself and I will definitely post what I experiencing as time goes on.

Network marketing is about making contact and one way to start off is by creating a list of contacts whom you already know. The problem with these types of lists is that you can end up losing friends if you begin to make the wrong contacts. A common method of getting new leads is by creating a list of at least 100 people - even if you are only acquaintances. You are then supposed to contact everyone on your list and let them know about your great business opportunity.

Where Prospect Lists Go Wrong

Creating a long list of people you may know well or barely know is not a bad idea. The issue comes in when you try to pitch them about your business. Your good friends will probably not mind so much but they will get annoyed with you if you continue to push. Some people actually become annoyed because they have heard it all before.

The other day, I saw a comment on my Facebook stream in which someone said they hate when their friends sign-up to a network marketing program and try to get them to do the same. You see, you may think your business is the best and can truly help people, but some people get pitched all the time about some "amazing" opportunity and they don't want to hear it.

How to Make a Prospect List Count

A more helpful prospect list is one in which you know people who are positive, goal oriented, and highly motivated with their careers, family life, and life in general. Start off making your list of 100 or so people. Then remove the people on the list who you know are not go-getters. You want to work with people with good attitudes; people who want more out of life.

As new marketers, we often make the mistake of presenting our business to folks who could care less about making a change in their lives. They are happy where they are and don't feel the need to grow or try anything new.

The good thing about network marketing is that you get to pick and choose who you would like to work with. Why wouldn't you want a highly motivated person in your network? Seek out these individuals and continue to add them to your prospect list.

It's All in the Attitude

You can quickly tell positive people from negative people. I meet people with poor attitudes all the time. They make excuses for everything! I know that we are not all positive 100% of the time, but you can tell who is negative 90% of the time. A good attitude will take you a long way in network marketing. Choose to network with people who have an overall positive attitude and you will save yourself a lot of time and hopefully build a strong network in the process.

Are you losing friends by trying to pitch your business to them? The method of creating a list of everyone you know is a network marketing technique that has been taught for years. Whether or not your team has taught you this, you may come across it from reading books or web sites on the topic of marketing.

There is nothing wrong with creating a list, however, it's important to go through the list thoroughly and keep the people you know have somewhat of an interest in business. If you choose to go through your list and hound everyone on it, you are more likely on your way to being ignored rather than gaining new leads.

How to Lose Friends Quickly

You just became a network marketer. You are amped up and ready to tell anyone who will listen about your business and what a great opportunity it is. You may have been told to go out and contact everyone in your email address book, people you work with, your friends, and friends of friends.

Doing this will not only make you look like a cheesy salesperson, chances are they will block you from their emails, Facebook, Twitter, and any social scene online and offline. They will not want to be around you because they know you will try to sell to them. That is no longer being a friend, it is becoming a nuisance.

A Better Way to Network

You don't have to pester your friends and family to get business. Keep in mind that network marketing is a business. You need to treat it like a real business. Would you expect your friends and family to be your only customers if you owned a brick and mortar business? Probably not! There are millions of people who are seeking new business opportunities.

The key is attracting them. Now that we have the world wide web at our fingertips, attracting these targeted individuals is much easier. You have access to social media sites (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, etc.) as well as creating blogs and mini-sites revolving around your business. Place a way for leads to contact you via email or web forms and follow up with them.

This is so much easier and better (in my opinion) than pestering everyone who comes within 3-feet of you.
